Abstract

According to Chinese researchers, methodical studies on Turkish dialects in China begin after the founding of the People's Republic of China. Many of the institutions that conduct research and teaching especially on these dialects in China are in Beijing and Xinjiang. Xinjiang University, Xinjiang Normal University, and the Linguistic Research Institute of the Xinjiang Academy of Social Sciences are amongst these institutions. This study examined and evaluated phonetics teaching, selection of reading passages, speech phrases, grammar teaching, exercises, and glossary preparation of the language teaching book Uygur Tilidin Asas (2009), which is among the publications of Xinjiang University. Uygur Tilidin Asas is a Uyghur dialect teaching book prepared with a traditional approach, considering the principle from easy to difficult, from simple to complex, which is also applied in Elif-ba books. The work Uygur Tilidin Asas the principle of being economical in terms of the processing and presentation of the subjects has been observed, compared to modern language teaching sets. In modern language teaching, "speaking, writing, reading, and listening" skills are maintained in a way that support each other and course materials to support the language teaching book are also provided. Visual material that are aimed to motivate the learner is also included in the language teaching book. Even though Chinese researchers state that methodical studies on Turkish dialects have been started only after the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Uyghur book catalog reviews of the Publications of Nations, China's largest minorities publication, reveal that the statements do not reflect the facts. Although Uygur Tilidin Asas is a diligent work with good intentions, itis far from modern language teaching methods and practices in the teaching of New Uyghur Turkish. It also does not include audio-visual materials that support language and dialect teaching. This study aimed to draw attention to the need for written, visual and online studies in accordance with modern language teaching methods in the teaching of Turkish dialects, based on the example of teaching the new Uyghur Turkish.
