Yabancı Dil Olarak Türkçe Öğretiminde Masalların Kültür Aktarımındaki Rolü ve Önemi: TÜMAK-I Masal Projesi Örneği
Abstract
This article explores how TÜMAK tales can be utilized as an effective tool in teaching Turkish as a foreign language by supporting cultural transmission and enhancing language skills. The imagination, narrative richness, and linguistic diversity inherent in these tales transform them into literary works that boost learners' motivation. The study delves into the role of tales in developing reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills in detail. Türk Masal Külliyatı (TÜMAK) offers a rich resource in this context. Tales featuring linguistic elements such as rhymes, rhythm, proverbs, idioms, and tongue twisters present the beauty and vibrancy of the language to learners in a simple yet engaging manner. Additionally, when adapted to different language levels, these tales help students improve their reading comprehension, listening, speaking, and writing skills. In terms of reading skills, TÜMAK tales stand out with their structure, which facilitates comprehension. Suggested activities include word hunts within tales, forming sentences with new vocabulary, and identifying the main idea. For listening skills, oral narrations of tales help students learn speech features like intonation and emphasis. Listening activities also develop skills such as summarizing the heard text, sequencing events, and interpreting the intentions of characters. Writing-focused activities include completing tales with alternative endings, writing diaries from the perspectives of characters, or composing tales from students' own cultures in Turkish. These creative tasks reinforce grammatical structures while enhancing students' imagination. For speaking skills, tales provide opportunities for group dramatizations, tale-themed discussions, and the creation of dialogues based on characters. Such activities offer learners a chance to use the language naturally and collaboratively. Beyond supporting language acquisition, TÜMAK tales also facilitate cultural transmission. By reflecting the daily lives, societal norms, and relationships with nature and community of the Turkish people, these tales provide learners with not only Turkish language skills but also an awareness of Turkish culture. In this regard, TÜMAK tales serve as a comprehensive learning resource that goes beyond being a mere language-teaching tool, enabling the transmission of cultural context while fostering an engaging and multidimensional learning experience in teaching Turkish as a foreign language.
